Document Summary

Descartes recalls that he has experienced dreams both improbable, like what insane people believe is happening in their real lives, and realistic, matching his own waking life. While he feels certain that he is awake at the time of writing this, he remembers times where he felt the same but only later found himself to have been dreaming. As such, he concludes that there is no definitive way to tell if he is dreaming or awake. Assuming that he is dreaming at the moment of writing this, descartes acknowledges that the things he perceives must at least be things he"s experienced in the real world. Even the imaginary scenes are creatures created by artists are based upon real-life components like anatomical parts, colors, and shapes. Therefore he can ascertain that numbers, time, and other simple elements of the world do exist. This can then be applied to mathematical concepts, which are true even if a person is dreaming.
