Document Summary

General considerations for the use of various dosage forms. Systemic use: iv, oral tablets, injectable (but sometimes im like vaccines are local) Local: creams, lotion, ointments (topical), eye-drops, ear drops, im (vaccines), inhalers (bronchodilators) Emergency use (rapid onset drugs): epipen(im), iv, sublingual, inhaler (for asthma) Age: suspensions, liquids and should consider taste: young children, elderly. Excipients: pharmaceutical ingredients in a dosage form other than the active agent. Others: diluents (fillers); binders; lubricants; disintegrating agents. Diluents are important for safety and convenience of accurate dosage. Solubilizer can be surfactants or ethanol used to dissolve drug (api) Solution: mix of two or more components that form a single phase that is homogenous down to molecular level. Solute: dispersed as molecules or ions throughout solvent. Solubility: drug must dissolve and therefore solvent solubility is important. For weak acids and bases, total solubility depends on intrinsic solubility and ionization of solute (pka, ph: ionized drugs = more soluble.
