The book i have chosen is the life of pi by yann martel. In this response, i will be talking about social conditions, cultural expectations, economic circumstances, relationships, race, and ethnicity. Social conditions: during pi"s and his brother ravi"s leisure time, they usually spent it outdoors. They explore and learn about various types of religions. This is very different from the lifestyle today. During the 1970s the tradition of religious practices and zoo keeping were starting to fade and were thought negatively of. Pi expresses his feelings about this and says, "i know zoos are no longer in people"s good graces. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both. " (martel, pg. 19) This shows that this year, india is facing its changing point. Their economy is struggling a lot and religion is slowly fading away. Cultural expectations: pi believes in more than one religion and in india, it is usually not accepted.
