Narcissus was a mythological greek hero famous for his beauty in boeotia, a territory of thespiae in ancient greece. He was the handsome son of the river god, cephisus and the nymph, liriope. A seer, tiresias was asked if the child would live a long life, she replied if he never knows himself . When he was sixteen years old, the nymph echo fell in love with him but her love was rejected. Echo was heartbroken and disappeared, until only her voice lingered. Aside from echo, many other nymphs wanted narcissus" love, but were snubbed. When narcissus, having come to a pool to quench his thirst, saw his reflection in its smooth surface, and fell in love with it. Since he could not obtain the object of his love he died of thirst and sorrow by the same pool. If he had reached to take a drink, he would have shattered his own image into thousands of pieces.
