Document Summary

As a family support practitioner, one can look for qualities that enable the family to maintain its equilibrium as it experiences crisis. Families may be temporarily thrown off course under stressful conditions and will return to previous functioning, and this needs to be respected. These definitions also tend to be viewed in terms of wellness, rather than deficits, and this is what is meant when we refer to the holistic approach to working with families using a strength based model. Stuart shanker, a professor at york university, refers to the dynamic systems theory. This theory views all factors in this family system as potentially interdependent and mutually constraining. Physical, biological, and social- environmental factors are all elements of this unit; often expressed as nature and nurture. In terms of resiliency, protective factors and/or risk factors are developed from this dynamic family system.
