Vlan is new, recent functionality, flexible lan backbone architecture, which is exception to the structured design approach, we would not be able to go with structured designed approach. Software assigns computer, not hardware, to lan segment or subnet. Normally cannot connect/assign one computer in one access layer to the another, in vlan that doesn"t happen. Switches that don"t use vlan, will segment the network based on physical location and the 80/20 rule. As a reminder, segment mean dividing access layers. Reminder: 80/20 rule means assign computer that, 80% of the traffic generated by that computer stays local, minimizes unnecessary traffic on network, the 20% will go to the other access layer or backbone. Exception to 80/20 rule: if the users with different physical location need to access the same lan resources. 2nd exception: vlan switches, flexible architecture that combines lan backbones, combines access layer and distribution layers.
