Document Summary

Functional qs: aimed at more at thinking about a specific / particular individual and the behaviour they"re expressing. Evolution / phylogenetic qs: thinking more about a specific behaviour over many generations (aka over evolutionary time) Martin daley and margo wilson: first teachers of the course at mcmaster, used pre-existing social and culture data from an evolutionary lens. Understand the difference between top down and bottom up strategies. Different strategies for generating and testing evolutionary hypotheses. Top down: theory-driven: deriving hypotheses from existing theories, starting from an existing theory (often robust), and using it to develop some question that we might not be fully sure about. Bottom up: observation-driven: developing hypotheses about adaptive function based on a known observation. Look at slide for top-down vs bottom up example: ex of top-down: evolution by ns theory of parental investment and sexual selection hypothesis form prediction.
