The battle of midway began june 4th and lasted till june 7th in 1942. June 3, 1942 pby were flying a scouting patrol coming from midway. The abbreviation pby were known to be during this time as patrol bombers the y was used to attach consolidated assignments. As the day went by additional sightings were reported however the japanese force was not visible. B-17s and pbys came from midway and attacks were sighted, but with minimal results. Heavy anti- aircraft fire helped keep the crews from remaining in the area. During this time in order to determine the effects of the attack a heavy cruiser and one transport needed to be reported as hit, along with a second cruiser, hit on the stern. That night, four patrol bombers needed to carry. Mark xiii torpedoes out to create the first nighttime torpedo attack by patrol planes on surface ships.
