Juan trippe had been instrumental in the development of the commercial aviation industry in the united states. With foresight and audacity, as well as deep connections with powerful politicians in washington, trippe secured for pan american airways a series of protected routes that permitted his company to dominate the industry during the postwar years. Trippe transformed pan american airways into the most powerful airline in the united states and in the process he would become a key figure in the development of the larger aviation industry. Juan trippe was also key to the transformation of the image of aviation. He would sell the public on the idea of aviation. When trippe arrived on the scene, aviation was still regarded as the domain of eccentrics, daredevils and other odd sorts (think of the old barnstormers). Airplanes also had a reputation for being uncomfortable, noisy, loud, and even dangerous.
