Geography 2152F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Lightning, Satellite Imagery, Northern Hemisphere
Document Summary
Wild re dates to the time when trees rst evolved 400 million years ago. Many res start naturally as a result of lightning or volcanic eruptions. After a re, vegetation completes a cycle from early colonizing plants to mature ecosystem. The ecosystem that evolves adapts to the climate at that location and time. Many species have evolved to withstand re or promote the life of the species after a re event. Oak and redwood trees have bark that resists re damage. Some pine trees have seeds that only open after a re. The geologic record shows an increase in the amount of charcoal in sediment approximately 10,000 years ago. This suggests high amounts of wild re activity at the time. Increased use of re by humans for clearing land and for heat, cooking, etc. Wild re requires three elements: fuel, oxygen, and heat. If any of these are lost, the re will dissipate.
