Nerve plexuses & re exes ch 16b overview of nerve plexuses. Nerve plexus: network of interweaving anterior rami of spinal nerves. Major plexuses include the cervical, brachial, lumbar & sacral plexuses. For each region of spinal nerves, focus on the following: Location that the spinal nerves arise from spinal cord. General region of the body innervated (sensory, motor components) Anterior rami of spinal nerves t1-t11 are intercostal nerves. Innervate intercostal muscles, abdominal muscles & overlying skin. With the exception of the spinal nerve t1, the intercostal nerves do not form plexuses. Spinal nerve t12 is called a subcostal nerve, because it arises below the ribs. Left & right cervical plexuses are formed by anterior rami of spinal nerves c1-c4. Innervate anterior neck muscles, skin of the neck & parts of the head & shoulders. The phrenic nerve: originates primarily from c4. Travels inferiorly through thoracic cavity & innervates the diaphragm brachial plexus.
