Cerebrum: location of conscious thought & origin of intellectual functions. Deep regions of gray matter = cerebral nuclei cerebral hemispheres. The 2 hemispheres are separate, except at a few locations where bundles of axons connect them. Corpus callousum = largest tract connecting hemispheres. Hemispheric lateralization hemispheric/cerebral lateralization d q estate lobes. Each hemisphere is divided into 5 lobes. 3 categories of functional areas: motor areas: control voluntary motor functions, sensory areas: provide conscious awareness of sensation, association areas: integrate & store information. Primary motor cortex: controls voluntary skeletal muscle activity. Innervation to various body parts can be diagrammed as a motor homunculus on the precentral gyrus. Motor speech area (broca area, 44 & 45) controls muscular movements necessary for vocalization. Primary somatosensory cortex: receive general somatic sensory information. Sensory homunculus: receive information forehand, face, etc. Primary visual cortex (17) processes visual info; located in temporal lobe. Primary auditory cortex (41) processes auditory info; located in temporal lobe diencephalon.
