Senses: receptors, gustation & olfaction ch 19a overview of general & special senses. Our bodies are constantly exposed to sensory information called stimuli. Stimuli are detected by sensory receptors in our body. General senses such as temp, pain, touch, stretch & pressure. Special senses such as gustation, olfaction, vision, equilibrium & hearing classi cation of receptors. General sense receptors are distributed throughout the skin & organs. Special sense receptors are housed in complex organs in the head modality of stimulus. Baroreceptors: detect pressure changes within body structures: nociceptors: detect painful stimuli clinically signi cant types of pain. Phantom pain: sensation associated w/ a part of the body that has been removed. Referred pain: impulses from certain viscera are perceived as originating not from the organ but from the skin.
