Document Summary

Lecture 7 biological hazards and human health. The human body is a habitat and host to many organisms. Associations that harm or bother us are infectious diseases. Zoonosis: infectious disease transmissible to humans from other animals. Protozoa: unicellular, parasitic: larger than bacteria and viruses. Bacteria: unicellular, most are not parasitic: either aerobic or anerobic or tolerate either, some form spores, larger than viruses, smaller than bacteria. Viruses: strand of dna or rna, parasitic: smaller than bacteria and protozoa. Immune system distinguishes self from foreign : active immunity: on first exposure to antigen, body produces antibodies. Vaccination: antigen preparation = active immunity, antibody preparation = passive immunity. If enough members of a group are immune, it is hard to maintain a chain of infection. Isolation: the separation of persons who have an infectious illness: quarantine: the separation of persons who have been exposed to an infectious agent. Airborne transmission in aerosols (distinct from droplet transmission)
