Charcot was studying hysteria (a disorder where patient experiences symptoms like paralysis of limbs with no organic basis) Hysteria, known as conversion disorder, patient is not faking yet nothing is physically wrong with them. Charcot found that hysterical disorders often started with a traumatic event in childhood. Charcot found that he could make the patients symptoms vanish using hypnosis. Freud was dazzled at the sight of these paralyzed patients suddenly able to walk or blind patients suddenly able to see.
