Social Stratification Current Event Assignment
The current event I have discovered shows gender social stratification in India. The
article is about Madhu Vaishnav who is the founder of The Institute for Philanthropy and
Humanitarian Development which is a nonprofit organization located in Jodhpur, India. Jeanne
De Kroon was visiting Asia, which is where she saw the caste-system in play firsthand. The
caste-system is one of the oldest surviving social stratifications that is still used in today’s
society in India. The caste-system is a class structure that is determined when you are born. Plus,
you could not move up the ladder, so if your family is poor, then you will stay poor and can’t
move up the scale to middle class or upper class. The article stated that “she witnessed the
implications of it for women. “They wouldn’t be allowed to go to the bathroom all day when
working in the clothing factories, or they would spend a week’s salary on a bag of diapers”
(Wagenknecht). Being in India made her realize that societies consumption of fashion changing
all the time made by women in India. In our society we just buy and throw away as soon as it’s
not fashionable anymore. Kroon realized she wanted to help these women out, which how ZAZI
was created. She developed this to hire women in the local Jadhpur area. Plus, paying fair wages,
funding education, and supporting local female artisans who lack humane working environment.
The problems in India for women include dropping out of school to marry at age 14, having
children before 25, some survive within the sex-trafficking. Jeanne stated, “The entire company
