Hypha: long branch filaments: used for absorption of food. Mycelia: groups of hyphae together above ground and below. Mushrooms are fruiting bodies spore factories but they are formed by masses of hyphae twisted together. 3. 5 miles across, 3 feet into the ground. Estimated to be around 2400 years old. Spores: reproductive structures; very small; very resistant. 5 main groups: chytrids, zygomycetes, glomeromycetes, ascomycetes, basidiomycetes. Oldest fungal fossil ~460 mill yrs old, but the kingdom is thought to be >600 mill. Sometimes they live on dead matter (decomposers) Sometimes they live with a photosynthetic partner (mutualistic relationships) Some can cause human disease or ruin crops or homes. Some can produce harmful or useful compounds. Plant diseases: 80% are caused by fungi, ex. corn smut, chestnut blight, ergots: harms the plant and harms the animals that eat the infected material. A mycosis is a fungal disease seen in an animal.
