L33 Psych 326 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Continuity Equation, Developmental Science, Greatest Generation
Document Summary
Themes and issues in adult development & aging. Biopsychosocial perspective- view of development/aging as complex interaction of biological, psychological, and social processes. Gerontology ( developmental science - scientific study of the aging process. 4 principles of adult development and aging. Continuity: changes are continuous over the life span. We have abandoned stage development, except in early childhood. Normal, or primary, aging is different from disease. Role of genes & environment across adult life span. Trying to determine what normal aging looks like. Individuals remain the same even though they change (people generally feel the same, despite aging) Diversity: people vary within and between age groups. Aka: individual differences (vertical differences) vs. age- related differences (differences along the solid black curve) Dispersion: peoples" individual performance varies on task (looking at the range of an individual"s performance, if they perform a task, for example, 25 times, and then averaging those results and assessing the variance)
