The cold war has a long history if we are merely discussing the relations between the us and russia. Cold war: the hostilities between the us and the soviet union between. Not once during the cold war did the us and ussr come into direct military contact. They came very close in many situations. Pitted the ideologies, economies, cultures of two societies in a global contest to decide which of the two systems will prevail. Development of nuclear weapons and a subsequent arms race. This made direct military contact virtually impossible. Cuban missile crisis - they came very close to nuclear war.
