There is a lot of anti-catholicism in the 19th century in ireland, britain, the united. August is told they would get their independence in 1914. So the british say yeah nevermind we need you for the war effort so we are not going to give you your independence right now. This does not sit well with a large portion of ireland. Easter monday, 1916 and is nicknamed the easter rising. Their leader patrick pearse gave the proclamation of the irish republic. It has a similar message as the declaration of independence. This shows the continued relevance and salience of these ideas.
