MUS 2420 Lecture 17: Lecture 17
Document Summary
Lecture 17: classical jazz funeral: the band leads a procession, followed by a hearse carrying the coffin, then mourners, and members of the funeral association. Preceding the burial at the cemetery, the band plays hymns and dirges (slow instrumental laments) Outside the church or home the funeral sermon is preached. The band then leads the procession to the graveyard. After the internment, the band performs celebratory music and shifts to a faster paced lively repertory. Members of the second line wear ribbons, banners and laminated pins. Sometimes they wear t-shirts describing the deceased individual: the music. A march in medium tempo accompanies the initial procession to the funeral home or church. At the church the band plays appropriate hymns chosen by the church or family and are in a solemn homophonic style. When the procession arrives at the cemetery, the snare drummer plays a long roll.
