Importance of different problem types: teachers tend to focus only on. Separate result unknown: teachers should spend equal amount of time on other types of problems. Students become too familiar with common problem structure: do not use reasoning skills, does not allow for alternative ways of reasoning, reasoning should be more important than solution. Understanding structure gives them effective tools for multi-digit computations. Students rely on memorized procedures that prevents reasoning. Direct modeling: here are some of the strategies. These strategies are used by children who recognize that it is not necessary to actually construct and count sets. They focus on the counting sequence itself: counting on from first, counting on from larger, counting on to, counting down, counting down to. Many children pick up the number facts from the multitude of activities you do with them. Children will invent their own strategies: let them! Always talk about the solution method like we do with number talks!
