The nature and value of philosophy lecture notes. Philosophy is not a theory, but an activity ludwig wittgenstein, tractatus logico-philosophicus. The word philosophy is derived from the greek word philos, meaning love, and sophia, meaning wisdom: it involves the reasoned pursuit of a comprehensive understanding of reality, knowledge, and how we should live. Extrinsic value is instrumental value: usefulness, ex. Money because we can exchange it for other things. Professional ethics can be of great practical importance to a professional. Misunderstanding your organization"s code of ethics can get you fired and ruin your career, so thinking philosophically about professional ethics could help avoid this. Philosophy can be extrinsically valuable as well as intrinsically valuable. It can contribute to a person"s intellectual and moral development. One of the values of philosophical though that it can make a person autonomous. Autonomy derives from the greek word autos, meaning self, and nomos meaning law: it is the state of being self-governed, self-ruled.
