PHI 1120 Lecture 3: Professional-Client Relationships

14 views1 pages

Document Summary

The professional is an expert acting at the direction of the client. The client sets the ends and the professional finds the means. The professional"s job is not to decide what goals to pursue but to do what the clients tell them. The professional is much like a mouthpiece or a hired gun. They act on behalf of the client and they don"t ask why. Two free and informed persons (the professional and the client) make an agreement. The professional and the client"s job is to carry out the terms outlined in the agreement. They are involved in a partnership characterized by trust and mutual cooperation. They take each other"s interests more seriously than interests of strangers. The professional in some respects is like a parent. A parent has superior knowledge and experience to her child and thus takes responsibility and authority in decision making.
