: Ice Bath Preparation
1. Have ice cubes crashed into small pieces (enough that a thermometer can move through them). Place crashed ice
cubes in a gallon size plastic bag. Add a half cup of salt to the bag and closed the zipper. Mix them well by shaking
the bag.
2. Transfer a mixture of ice and salt to a 1000-mL beaker. You should have ice up to the 1000-mL mark.
3. Place a thermometer in the ice bath and record the temperature approximately every 30 seconds (that is, 0.5 min,
1.5 min, 2 min, 2.5 min, and so on). BE CAREFULE: You donât want to break your thermometer! You should
be able to record the temperature to 1 decimal place. Stop recording when the temperature of the ice bath does not
change for two consecutive recordings. The temperature of the ice/salt bath should be at least less than â15°C. If
not, go back to the step 1. Increase the amount of salt and repeat the steps 1 â 3. Your thermometer can only
measure as low as â20°C. If temperature reaches â20°C, then stop recording. Write ââ20.0°Câ as the ice bath
temperature
