Idea that individuals get self concept from groups: people want to view their ingroups favorably relative to outgroups. Fulfils their need for positive self-esteem/helps maintain positive self identity. If your ingroup ended up on the shorter end of the stick, you"ll try to raise their standing or try to escape. Just friends going out - everyone knows everyone"s roles. Social roles in groups: social roles - shared expectations about how particular people should behave in the group, benefits - people know what to expect from one another, costs - lost of personal identity/personality.
