Attachment= close emotional bond between two people. Bowlby: triggers emotional response in parents, ecology view. Freud: infants attach to person or object providing oral satisfaction. Harlow: investigated with monkeys to prove freud was wrong, wired monkey, cloth monkey. Erikson: first year of life is key time for attachment development, sense of trust or mistrust sets later expectations. Went in to other houses and observed people. Strange situation: used to measure different types of attachment, start with mom and baby playing, stranger comes in and mom leaves, observe what child does when mother reenters room= reunion. Ainsworth"s measure of infant attachment to caregiver. Lowest level of needs must be met until attention can be put toward higher level. Physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self actualization. Self= all characteristics of person: childs cognitive representation of themselves. Visual self recognition tests: sit child in front of mirror. Young children perceive self as external characteristic. Older children recognize difference between inner and outer states.
