Pregnancy and birthing: uterine contractions, baby"s head moves through birth canal, afterbirth when placenta, umbilical cord, and other membranes are detached and expelled. Water breaks contractions start: before or after water breaks, amniotic sac breaks. Ends with transition: 7 centimeters dilated, pushing relatively soon- 1-2 hours, contractions in waves. Uterus thinned 7-8 cm dilated ends at 10cm dilation and ready to push. Station=degree to which fetus has descended into birth canal. Often accompanied by desire to bear down or push. Usually only allowed to last 2 hours: amniotic sac as broken, afraid of infection since no longer sterile environment ends with delivery of fetus. Medication with analgesics: epidural block, oxytocics, etc. Prepared childbirth and lamaze method cesarean sections for breech babies, other risks and benefits. Precipitate delivery: happens so quickly may have tearing rupture membrane, amniotomy rupture sac to speed up delivery.
