PSYC 1004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Sigmund Freud, Systematic Desensitization, Dream Interpretation
Document Summary
Insight therapy: give insight of why they are having emotional difficulties, if insight can change behavior. Unconscious motives, free association, dream analysis, resistance, transference (transfer feelings to therapist) Client-centered therapy: (therapist does not make assumptions, respects everyone is unique) carl rogers. Ideal self (sometimes perception of real self lower than what actually, therapy to reduce that gap, or ideal to high) Exposure treatments (if you expose the individual to the thing they are afraid of, the will eventually extinguish the fear (phobias)) The thing you are afraid of, you will be exposed to. Ex: little peter eating ice cream, while a stuffed rabbit getting closer and closer. Gets you to relax, substitutes relaxation with stimulus you fear. Implosive therapy make it severe, want to scare you. You afraid of cats, close eyes and imagine tiger eating you. They want you to get afraid, then open eyes and everything is okay (exposure treatment to the extreme)
