Document Summary

Light dependent reactions: require light, occur in the thylakoid, capture energy from sunlight, make atp and reduce nadp+ to nadph, produce oxygen as a byproduct. Light independent reactions (carbon fixation: does not require light, occur in the stroma, use atp and nadph to synthesize organic molecules from carbon dioxide. Pigments absorb photons of visible light: photons: particle of light that acts as discrete bundle of energy, energy is inversely proportional to the wavelength of the light. Light energy can remove electrons from some molecules: the photoelectric effect, visible light spectrum: 400nm 740nm. In plants, water is the electron donor replaces electron that reaction center donated to electron acceptor. Chloroplasts have two linked photosystems (i & ii: oxygenic photosynthesis, noncyclic photophosphorylation. The light dependent reactions: photosystem ii b6-f complex photosystem i nadp reductase atp synthase. Atp is produced via chemiosmosis: atp synthase uses proton gradient to provide energy for atp synthesis, protons pumped from thylakoid space to stroma.
