47 views3 pages

Document Summary

Atoms are the smallest, most capable components of cells (atoms are composed of electrons, protons, and neutrons but they are not stable building blocks. Electrons are on energy levels and control the activity of the atom. Bohr model (best model for viewing most molecules) Element- substance that cannot be broken down into another substance by chemical means, same number of protons. Atomic number- number of protons in an atom (defines type of element) Atomic mass- sum of protons and neutrons in an atom. Dalton- unit of mass (protons and neutrons are each 1 dalton) Carbon is the basis for most living molecules (anything with carbon is considered organic) Isotopes- atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons (ex. Movement of an electron further away from the nucleus create more potential energy. Levels go k, l, m, n (from nucleus out) Electrons in the outermost shell are valence electrons.
