New model army
• Formed in 1845 by parliament and Oliver Cromwell
• Parliamentary army was made up of militias from London and counties in the southeast
o not professional soldiers or infantries
o lacked strong command and leadership
o military had to be improved
• new model army – three regiets that were’t restrited to a area of the kigdo
o Thomas Fairfax was the captain general
▪ Initial leader of the siege of oxford
▪ Led parliamentary army and defeated the royalist army is the battle of Naseby
o Oliver Cromwell
▪ Only member of parliament who did not give up his military position
▪ Lieutenant general and second in command
• self-denying ordinance – members of parliament who were in the army/navy had to give up the
positions
• power was given to soldiers based on ability rather than class or status
• strong puritan and protestant beliefs
• the army remained intact after the first civil war
• after adwalton Moore, things went downhill for the royalist army
o the kings forces started to suffer desertions, death, lack of funding
• 1643 the tide began to turn in favor of the kings army
• Bristol was captured
o Very strategically located
o Industry was basic, but Bristol was a big manufacturing city
o They would have an industrial base to resupply the army
o parliamentary army gains strength
▪ when the parliamentary army regains its strength, Scotland become increasingly
strong as well
▪ 1643 protestants in Scotland wrote the solemn league and covenant
• An oath they took and wanted the parliamentary army to take it too
o The Presbyterians of Scotland would send an army to help
defeat the king if the English parliament will establish the
Presbyterian church in England
o The Scotts send an army and some money to assist
o This was a decisive moment
• They wated to defeat the kig eause they did’t wat iposition
from the church of England
• In Ireland at this time, civil war was going on
o The confederate assembly supported king Charles because he was moving the church in
a catholic direction
▪ Eventually became the Irish confederation
• The revolution was a complicated event because of the civil wars and the number of various
groups involved
