It was evident there would be a war: between the cavaliers (charles) and the roundheads (parliament) The king could issue proclamations that would force men to join his army. Parliament had the militia ordinance to summon recruits: there were conflicts in the counties, by the fall of 1642, most people had chosen who to support. Some people would change sides or desert: most aristocrats and gentries were with the king. Revolution and rebellion scared them: s(cid:373)all (cid:271)usi(cid:374)ess workers, far(cid:373)ers, a(cid:374)d (cid:373)iddle (cid:272)lass were o(cid:374) parlia(cid:373)e(cid:374)t"s side. Parliament tried to collect loans and contributions from wealthier people. Tried to get war materials from the public. Weapons, ammo, clothing, food, horses: bread and biscuits and cheese, scarcity of meat, army clothing was not uniform. The junto in the house of commons tried to levy a sales tax.
