Msw: municipal solid waste = household trash: lots of trans-state waste movement; often has to do with who has waste and who has space. Key concepts: 2 ways to deal: landfill, burning, types of hazardous waste, types of solid waste, waste management, landfills, combustion. Integrated waste management: recycling, composting, waste reduction, reusing. Loophole: basel convention hazardous classification, any phase (solid, liquid, gas) Industrial (non-hazardous, mining materials, household products: biomagnification on the left (concentrations in ppm, lipophilic magnifies @ every step, algal blooms magnify because of all the photosynthesis. Bioaccumulation: within phytoplankton, ocean flow, the movement is magnification: microbial remediation willow trees around the landfill = retain information, phytoextraction: break down into, rhizofiltration: roots in water (sunflowers) absorb pollutants, inc. radioactive isotopes and organic chemicals. Takes a long time to go through all that trash, bury effectively and make sure not reactive, smelly, etc. Incomplete decomposition (tires, rubber) plastics start to rise to the surface (fluidity)
