CRM 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Homicide
Document Summary
There"s a need to distinguish race and ethnicity. Race differences in involvement: blacks commit more violent crime, few differences in property crimes, whites have more duis, asians have more illegal gambling, blacks are more involved in personal crimes. Especially robbery: blacks are more likely to be arrested for drug offenses. No changes in whites" arrests: most crime, especially violent, is interracial. Our segregation is a factor causing this: explanations for the homicide divide. Diminishes resources that hold communities together isolation: racial disparities. Disproportion of minority representation in official crime statistics. Self report studies show much smaller gaps across race/ethnicity. Blacks are 4 times as likely as whites to be arrested for possession: despite comparable rates of use, racial disparities have increased.
