Effective group leadership requires the ability to: Support groups: help members cope with stressful life events and enhance general coping skills (grief group, cancer patient group). Education groups: help members acquire new information and learn new skills (foster parenting, adolescent sexuality). Growth groups: provide opportunities for members to become aware of or change their thoughts, feelings, or behaviors (values group for teens). Therapy groups: help members make positive adjustments or rehabilitate after experiencing a social or health trauma (aa, diversion). Socialization groups: help members develop social skills and new behavior patterns (aspergers group, foster care youth group). Mixture of approach and avoidance behavior among members due to anxiety over not knowing each other. Members work out issues of status and role with the leader and members.
