Document Summary

Horizontal (transverse) plane or section: looking down on brain. Saggital plane or section: corpus callosum showing split in half. Tract, fasciculus, funiculus: bundle of axons coursing through brain. Sulcus (sulci), fissure: grooves in cortex increases cortex surface area. Gyrus (gyri): bulge of tissue between two sulci increases cortex surface area. Corpus callosum: largest commissure millions of fibers that connect two halves of the brain, mostly same structure. Transverse fibers (interneurons): pathways in brain or interneurons. Descending fibers: axons going down spinal cord - motor. Nuclei: collection of cell bodies or collection of neurons. Gray matter: cell bodies are located here. Meninges -dura mater very tough, membrane-like material, arachnoid, pia mater: protective covering of cns: three layers top, middle, inner, keeps things from getting in or out. Cerebrospinal fluid (csf): fluid that fills core ventricles in brain, also central canals in spinal fluid, helps displace weight of brain tissue buoyancy, removes waste material from cns.
