Culture: the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual, and emotional features of society or a social group that encompasses, not only art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions, and beliefs (unesco) Culture is what we get up and do on a daily basis without even thinking about it. Us - get up and start day by taking shower, then move into their daily schedule -- certain commonalities even though a lot of personalization. Defining society: people gathered into distinct groups based on Basic needs for water, food shelter: brought a lot of people together, communities started to form. Communication, religion, societal practices: needed to bond, to organize an ever- growing community of humans. Turning point = rise of nation state in the 1600s (treaty of westphalia): idea of nationalism, idea of identity. Society is based on personal choice and reason.
