Family of procreation: the family when you get married and have children. Extended family household (three or more generations) seen as an adaptation to poverty. Decent groups: social unity and solidarity are based on belief of ancestry. Lineage: unilineal descent (using only one line) group based on demonstrated descent. Ambilineal descent: people chose the descent group to which they belong. Some cultures you can belong to two or more. How people in a society recon their kin relationships. American kinship is bilateral (traced equally on both sides) Based on how people perceive similarities and differences.
