Jane (rides bikes, eats healthy, urban living) brings us to conclude: Making smart choices --> doing so based on existing stereotypical lifestyles. Prescribes to this particular set of norms and following a trend. Self affects society and society affects self. Agency itself cannot elicit social change, but is necessary. Social movements: ppl acting collectively towards social goal. Pressure greater institutions to rethink 20th century issues. We both change and replicate society through its existing social norms. High education = doing better is a social norm. Economy is a dominant social structure - going to college has become the baseline for achieving success in the institution of capitalism. Unfair/unpractical to ask individuals to use their agency to create social change. Libers put a lot more blame on society, while conservatives are more likely to blame personal agency. Perils in finding personal responses to structural causes.
