Review from last lecture: research, media, and advertising can be misleading, carefully examine claims/be a skeptic, tons of development happens before a baby is even born, this is why avoiding teratogens is so important. Infants know a lot: understanding of physical world (gravity, causality, etc. ), understanding of emotions (intentionality, goals, desires, etc. It informs our understanding of atypical development (cannot understand what is going wrong if you don"t know what"s "right": early diagnosis and treatment/intervention, early development in autism spectrum disorder. Social disparities (goal to reduce: think with language development and disparity vocabulary (30m word gap, closing achievement gaps, reducing prejudice and discrimination (reduce in-group/out-group biases, race, gender, etc. Legal implications: research on memory (ways to interview children who experience or witness some traumatic event, trusting eyewitness testimony, trying children as adults (research on morality, parenting, childcare education--maximizing warmth and responsiveness, education, maximizing learning.
