Students wore black armbands to protest the war. Court ruled that the students" rights were violated when they were suspended for wearing the armbands. Flag burning is a legitimate form of expression despite it being distasteful. Texas tried to make a flag protection act but the court ruled it unconstitutional. Over the years, free speech/expression has expanded to include. Citizens united v. fec - campaign contributions. Court is willing to restrict the following acts of speech but the boundaries are unclear. It is hard to say what are fighting words anymore. Protecting children is a limit on free expression.
