EES-1030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sedimentary Rock, Clastic Rock, Hematite
Document Summary
In chemical weathering, a rock"s minerals are dissolved into rainwater or changed into a new type of mineral. This happens mostly in warm and moist environments. In physical weathering, rocks are broken apart into smaller pieces. How do these cements form and what types of minerals are they made from: cement forms when seawater or groundwater travels through the empty spaces between sediment. Mineral crystals will form in-between the sediment if the water contains the chemicals that are needed. Cement is usually made out of minerals such as calcite, quartz, or hematite: name a marine environment where you would expect these sedimentary rocks to form, sedimentary rock with sand-sized grains. Beach or desert sand dunes: sedimentary rock with very fine (clay sized) grains.
