Classical conditioning: pavlov"s study, normally food is presented. We pair that with a neutral stimulus and this will cause the bell to come to eliciting salivation, making it into the conditioned stimulus: studies that are interesting to humans. Patient has carcinoma and is taking morphine, develops a tolerance. Fentanyl patch was replaced: if we develop tolerance, we"ll have tolerance to fentanyl. Look at tolerance development in rats: rats die of heroin overdose not based off of noisy cage more, but of taking the new dose in an unfamiliar environment. There is a taste and a light/sound stimulus. Quick review of neuroscience: debate in 1800s between golgi and cajal, cell theory was accepted: cells were divided into smaller individual particles. Except people aren"t really sure if that"s true with neurons: golgi says that neurons have continuity. This is the reticular theory: cajal says that they do not.
