BIOL 2652 Lecture 4: Chapter 23
Document Summary
Chapter 23: system of passageways to move air into the lungs ultimately ending in gas exchange, nose. Opening at the end of the nose where air enters. Connection between nose and throat: pharynx. Upper part that extends from internal nares to soft palate. Hypoid bone to beginning of larynx: larynx. Prevents food from entering larynx: trachea. Make trachea rigid and difficult to collapse: primary bronchi. Sends air to each lung: secondary bronchi. Sends air to each lobe on each lung. Three on right and two on left. Where gas exchange is generated: lungs. Parietal pleura: outer layer covers inside of thoracic cavity. Visceral pleura: inner layer covering lung tissue. Pleura fluid: located between visceral and parietal pleura, lubricates and acts as shock absorber for lungs. Gases move form high pressure to low pressure. Pressure of a gas determined by its volume. Decrease pressure of thoracic cavity below atmospheric pressure.
