Document Summary

Discussion of life: biotic factors living things in environment, abiotic factors nonliving things in environment. Anything that no longer has functioning cells = dead tritous. Life distinct condition differing living organisms from everything else: no perfect definition, scientists list 5 common characteristics, unity of life. Composition (made of same basic chemicals and molecules) Reproduction (has to be able to reproduce) Homeostasis (ability to maintain constant internal environment) Evolution (all evolve adaptations, etc. : composition chemical composition of living organisms is basically the same. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur (chonps) form . Water, salts, phosphates, amino acids (compounds critical for life) form : macromolecules nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, Dna = key to life, chemical messenger, controls everything. All living things made of one or more cells. 1 cell = unicellular, 1+ = multicellular: unicellular cells that function as a colony = colonial. All have a common plan: not all have a nucleus.
