Main focus is the study of language and its interaction with society: most importantly linguists are scientists, study the behavior of language, breaks apart languages and explains how they work, analyze language in terms of grammar. Compare it to cooking the list of materials needed is placed in the order you need them. Linguists write about language and explain the grammar in fine detail since languages vary in parts and how they combine these parts. Make up of morphemes (word-parts) which are made up of sounds. Three main parts of language: sounds, words, sentences. These are all ungrammatical: c/e because they have the wrong word order, a/b/d/f because they are missing a required part.
