Utilization of services: only 40% who ever had disorder received professional treatment (tx) There are people who do not want treatment and who do not seek treatment. Other people have gotten used to disorder and live with it. Others have disorders that do not interfere with their daily lives: only 20% who had disorder within past year received professional tx. Age trends: expect increasing lifetime prevalence but data don"t support this. Conclusions: mental disorders more prevalent than previously believed. If anything, rate of mental disorders is increasing. How do we know when someone is abnormal: criteria of abnormality. Quantitatively different from what most people experience. Problem: where"s cutoff between normal and abnormal. Qualitatively different from what we are used to. Ex: amphetamine psychosis, alcohol induced psychotic disorder. Reaction is out of proportion to the situation. Problem: how do you know if reaction is out of proportion. Problem: what about severe reaction to sever situation.
