3. Before this study was conducted, what factor was thought to motivate young infants to bond
to the care provider? Feeding was thought to motivate the young infant to bond with its care
provider. It was shown that this alone was not sufficient because the monkeys spent
significantly less time with the wire surrogate.
Mirror Neuron
1. What is a mirror neuron? Cells that are activated by observing the actions of another
individual
2. How did this study obtain evidence for the existence of mirror neurons in monkeys? What
function could mirror neurons have in a young infant? They could help facilitate their social
learning and allow them to form stronger bonds with their mothers by mimicking their facial
expressions and actions.
