PSYCH 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Autonomic Nervous System, Fast Path, Startle Response
Document Summary
Psych 202 - lecture 14 - emotion (10/26/16) Emotion - subjective, conscious experience characterized primarily by: Body movements (hand gestures, turning of body) Universality hypothesis: some expressions and actions naturally happen when feeling some emotions, for example blind and sighted people who are happy smile. Display rules: cultural norms defining when, where, and how a person should express emotion -- collectivistic cultures have individuals who suppress their emotions more. Body expression can also indicate how a person feels without reading their face. Changes in heart rate, body temperature, respiration. Amygdala: at the tips of the hippocampus; evaluates environment for possible danger and coordinates responses. Amygdala activity increases when viewing faces of others -- more activity if emotion is more intense. Removing amygdala in monkeys causes them to be docile, showing less intense emotions. The monkeys do not fear stimuli that normally made them scared (snakes) Similar things occur in humans who have damage to the amygdala.
